The London Marathon has become an annual, inspiring and colourful fixture in the world’s sporting calendar since the inaugural race on 29 March 1981: a celebration of fun, fundraising and fancy dress.
Over the years more than a million people have completed the 26.2-mile course, and i'll be joining that number this April.
I am running for DELTA, Deaf Education through Listening and Talking, a a voluntary association of young deaf adults, the families and teachers of deaf children. DELTA is a national charity which supports and develops the Natural Aural Approach to the education of deaf children. Both the Approach and the Association trace their origins back to a group of teachers of the deaf working together from 1980 to improve the outcomes for deaf children by
Organising meetings for families across the country who want to help their deaf children listen and talk;
Running Summer Schools for the whole family so that they can learn the skills and techniques they need;
informing local education authorities, doctors, health visitors, audiologists and other professionals who help deaf children about our approach and its achievements.
We as a family have benefited hugely from support provided by our Teachers of the Deaf and Audiology team, via technology and understanding how best to adapt environments to enable Will (who has moderate hearing loss) to meet his full potential. This is an opportunity for us to give a little bit back to an inspiring community by me making it round 26.2 miles of Londons streets, and Dave, Alice and Will pushing me out the door in the dark for training runs over the next few months.
Really grateful for any contributions you can make to this brilliant charity.
