My Story

I am Carrie. I am a Christian woman, wife to Bill, mother to Adam, Oliver and Darrcie and grandmother to Dora and Winnie and my newborn grandson Theodore. I have many years of experience in healthcare, having worked as a nurse, and now as a medical advisor to an engineering company which designs, tests and makes life saving medical devices. I ride a motorbike and am absolutely nuts about dogs and chickens and growing fruit and vegetables !

I have been given the opportunity to run (using that word loosely) The London Marathon, a once in a lifetime opportunity, on behalf of The Stroke Association.

As many of you may or may not know, I had a Stroke on the 6th December 2021, 4 months after I got married. What a way to start a happily married life !  It left me paralysed down my left side, unable to speak or eat, with my memory shot to pieces (or could that have been the menopause). I could not look after myself without assistance from others or various devices. I thought I was going to die! In my head, I said goodbye to all my family and my loving husband Bill. I had to retire from the career of nursing that I loved so much. It seemed my life was over.

Then my faith in God kicked in and in poured my grit, determination and drive (some might say stubborness) to get better and people were placed in my way who would help me channel that determination into my recovery. It was a long and slow (I am a very impatient person) journey, with my husband by my side at all times, cheering me on. But here I am today!

There is not enough help and support out there for people like me and their families and that is why I am doing this. Not just for my personal journey, but to raise awareness of The Stroke Association and the help it gives to people who are in my situation. I want to encourage those going through it that YOU can do it, YOU can make it, YOU can achieve it!

I would be so grateful if you could sponsor me to run the London Marathon for all those who can't do it or who can't be with us through Stoke. It may remind you of a loved one, or it may touch your life later in some way. But somehow, I would like to make a difference to someone, through your help and together with The Stroke Association. Lots of Love from me xx
