My Story

With over 5 million people visiting British racecourses each year, an 85,000 person army service the thrill and the spectacle of the UK’s second largest spectator sport - horse racing. But, growing up in the ‘Home of Horseracing’, I know that the going can be tough.

On 21st April 2024, I’ll be running 42.2km in the London Marathon to raise money and support Racing Welfare. Based in Newmarket, Racing Welfare leads the provision of human welfare services nationwide. They provide professional guidance and practical help to all those who work in the sport, or in associated professions, whose dedication is vital to the wellbeing of racing. Looking after both physical and mental health, Racing Welfare support them to continue to bring us all joy and excitement from their recruitment right through into retirement.

Studies show that 87% of jockeys report experiencing stress, anxiety or depression, with others affected by substance and alcohol abuse. But there are others, non-jockeys, that go under the radar - 2,300 people receive Racing Welfare’s support annually, and the number is rising. To support those working in frequently challenging conditions, every year, more than £3m must be raised to help maintain and develop the services offered, such as:

  • Mental health
  • Physical health
  • Career advice
  • Financial support
  • Addiction
  • Retirement
  • Management support
