My Story

Hello Everyone,

I extend a warm welcome to my page.

At the time of writing 20/02/24,  I am in the fourth week of my training for the London Marathon.

I am undertaking this marathon in loving memory of my dear Mum, Sandra Collinson (Purves) and my Dad, James Purves.

We tragically lost Mum almost two years ago to Lung Cancer.  Previously a fit and healthy 60 years young, her passing was swift and unexpected, leaving a profound impact on all of us.

You might wonder why I've chosen the London Marathon..

My mother's last Instagram post expressed her immense pride in me for running a half marathon and raising money for MIND in honor of my Dad shortly after his passing. The experience was incredibly challenging and emotionally taxing, yet very rewarding on a personal level.  It is something I take great pride in.

During our final moments with Mum, we discussed my accomplishment of running a half marathon for Dad.  I promised her that I would run the London Marathon in her honor, continuing the legacy of running for my Dad.

So here I am, 26.2 miles awaiting me on 21st April 2024.

Every 15 minutes, someone in the UK succumbs to lung cancer. The Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation stands as the sole UK charity wholly dedicated to combating this disease. They bear the weight of this responsibility with utmost seriousness, considering that lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths in both men and women in the UK.

In the days prior to my dad's passing, it had also been discovered that he had a mass on his lung. It is not thought to have been related to his passing.

Given our experiences in the last couple years, undoubtedly, this charity holds immense significance for me and my family.

I aspire to transform some of the pain and sorrow into a positive force. My aim is to raise funds for a charity that provides vital support to families during their most trying times.

If you find it within your means to contribute to my fundraising efforts, regardless of the amount, it would be deeply appreciated.

Thank you.

Craig

The London Marathon has become an annual, inspiring and colourful fixture in the world’s sporting calendar since the inaugural race on 29 March 1981: a celebration of fun, fundraising and fancy dress.

Over the years more than a million people have completed the 26.2-mile course – which runs from Blackheath to The Mall, with a spectacular finish in front of Buckingham Palace, showcasing the very best that the capital city has to offer.

What’s more, these participants have raised over a billion pounds for charity and there have been countless amazing tales of human achievement throughout the event’s history – living up to its aim of helping participants ‘to have fun, and provide some happiness and sense of achievement in a troubled world’.
