My Story

On the 3rd May 2015 my amazing, loving, caring mum (aged 50) passed away after battling cancer for numerous years. Mum, Karen Cornish spent her 5 final days in St Margaret's Hospice , Taunton… the place she chose to take her last breath.

Mum was a very popular women and loved by everyone she met. She was selfless and always put everyone first. After serving over 25 years for the NHS at Musgrove Park Hospital as a nurse/ward sister for Blake & Endoscopy her cancer got the better of her.

Seeing the closest person to you suffer for years and then waiting for the worst day to come is the hardest emotions anyone will have to go through but due to the amazing supporting staff at St Margaret’s they made this the easiest it could be for all my family and I.  Mum was smiling , comfortable & passed away so peacefully.

I want to say a Massive Thank You to St Margaret's Hospice as they support so many people and their families and without them people, like my mum, wouldn't be able to spend their final days in such a comfortable & supporting environment.

My inspiring friend, Lorin,  is currently receiving palliative care at St Margaret’s.

Lorin's kindly provided me these words 'To say this amazing  hospice has helped myself and my family is an understatement.  I was diagnosed with stage 4 incurable cancer last year, at the age of 34, and St Margaret’s were there for my family and I, from an early stage of my treatment, as soon as I had got over the initial shock and denial of the diagnosis. Ruth and Penny visited my partner and I at home to get an idea of how best they could help us, and since then, have been introduced to, and are supporting our daughter (aged 11) through the tricky, and emotional, subject of having a parent with cancer. It feels as though they are there with us, each step of the way, and having someone with experience of talking to someone with incurable cancer is both reassuring and helpful. Please help where ever you can!!!'

The time, care and support this incredible charity offers to everyone is unimaginable. This charity does so much more than I have mentioned and I really encourage you to check their website.

I know many people reading this will know someone who has passed at St Margaret’s so my marathon will be in memory of every single one of them.

In 2017 I completed the Taunton 10k and in 2018 I completed the Taunton Half Marathon.. both races I ran for St Margaret’s Hospice… 5 years on and having not ran for a few years I have been luckily enough to have the chance to make the triple and run London Marathon 2024 for St Margaret’s.

This is a charity close to many people’s hearts and I would be so grateful if you could sponsor me for this outstanding charity.
