In memory of Nikk Pavitt - as good as humankind has given us
Harry Madgwick Lawton
My Story
Nikk Pavitt was a wonderful human being - a loving husband and father, an outstanding teacher, an illustrator, and a committed runner. Tragically, Nikk was lost to cancer in 2023 but his memory lives on in all those who had the fortune of knowing him.
I worked with Nikk at St Mary Magdalene Academy over three years. When we caught each other at staff meetings or in the school corridors, our most common topic of conversation was running. We’d quickly update on how many miles we had run in recent weeks, what injuries we were carrying, and which races we had on the horizon.
Despite running the virtual London Marathon twice, Nikk never realised his ambition to run the official race. In fact, the day Nikk informed our department of his cancer diagnosis he also told me of another unsuccessful attempt to get into the race through the ballot.
It's therefore an honour to run the 2024 London Marathon in memory of Nikk, who was as good a man as humankind has given us. I am raising money for the hospice who looked after Nikk in his final days - Saint Francis Hospice in Romford. Please donate what you can as a way of thanking them for the care they showed Nikk in his hour of need.
More about Nikk
A life-long educator having qualified in 1995, Nikk worked as a social science and politics teacher for 28 years. He was also Deputy Head Teacher of the Sixth Form where I worked with him, and unwaveringly committed to his pupils’ education and future life chances. Despite teaching politics, Nikk would never give away his opinions to his pupils until his final lesson with them - a consummate professional, through and through.
Nikk was also an illustrator. Having been the son of a potter, Nikk had a creative childhood drawing endlessly. It was during this time he constructed the imaginary world of ‘hatpeople’ characters that he illustrated and narrated through several books.
Most importantly, Nikk was a wonderful husband to wife Caroline, and father to daughter Isabella. Remarkably, Nikk proposed to Caroline within sixteen weeks of meeting her, a brilliant story that symbolises his commitment to her and the family they built together.
It can be seen as a cliche to commend a person’s character upon their passing, but anyone who had the fortune of knowing Nikk knows him to have been one of the kindest, most gentle, and genuine souls to have lived.
