Running the London Marathon in a Gorilla suit!
Running the London marathon in a gorilla suit
My Story
MY STORY
I have been fortunate enough to visit the Mountain Gorillas of East Africa twice in my life.
Outside of my wedding day and the birth of my daughter, it was the most magical experience of my life.
Gorillas share 96% of their genetic makeup with humans and there are just over 1000 left in the World. We must ensure they are protected and given the opportunity to thrive in the wild.
ABOUT THE GORILLA ORGANIZATION
The Gorilla Organization was founded in the early 1990s to support the anti-poaching patrols created by the pioneering primatologist Dr. Dian Fossey.
Dr. Dian Fossey. Building on Dr. Fossey’s legacy, we looked into the reasons why wild gorilla poaching was so prevalent in Africa’s national parks. The findings of our research came to form the foundations of our innovative community-led approach to gorilla conservation.
In 2002, we took on our current name, The Gorilla Organization, and continued to expand the scope of our field projects, with a fundraising and administration headquarters in London supporting gorilla conservation field work in Rwanda, Uganda and DR Congo.
MY GORILLA SUIT STORY
In 2013, I was working on an event in Uganda and ahead of the event, we decided to run the Manchester 10k to raise funds for the Gorilla Organization. I ran as a gorilla, and my colleague ran as a banana.
I then visited Uganda and was fortunate to join a gorilla trek.
Then in 2016 and 2017, I convinced my friends colleagues to take part in the Great Gorilla Run around London to raise more funds for the Gorilla Organization.
In 2017, I was appointed a Global Ambassador for The charity and climbed the three peaks of the UK in a gorilla suit.
Prior to the pandemic, I completed the Valencia Half Marathon in a gorilla suit and now I will take on the full marathon and once again dust off the gorilla suit.
ABOUT THE LONDON MARATHON
The London Marathon has become an annual, inspiring and colourful fixture in the world’s sporting calendar since the inaugural race on 29 March 1981: a celebration of fun, fundraising and fancy dress.
Over the years more than a million people have completed the 26.2-mile course – which runs from Blackheath to The Mall, with a spectacular finish in front of Buckingham Palace, showcasing the very best that the capital city has to offer.
What’s more, these participants have raised over a billion pounds for charity and there have been countless amazing tales of human achievement throughout the event’s history – living up to its aim of helping participants ‘to have fun, and provide some happiness and sense of achievement in a troubled world’.
