My Story

24th April 2023 will be a date that lives with me for the rest of my life. It was the day that my dad passed away after his battle with a form of Chronic leukaemia. A journey that involved many weeks and months of isolation and hope that a donor could be found and then that his body would accept his new bone marrow as his own. Like many before him it wasn’t successful but for many others it has been and will be. But what they all have in common is hope that they have a way of getting a cure for their cruel diagnosis. That is what bone marrows donors do when they courageously agree to sign up as a donor and ultimately donate. The chance to have a cure for anyone is beyond belief and provides a motivation to get through all of the tough days of chemotherapy and isolation away from family and friends. That hope is everything.

Bone marrow donation has many misconceptions surrounding it and that is something I am passionate about changing. With this in mind I am hoping to raise awareness for all forms of leukaemia and the treatment methods and most importantly the donation process.

To do this I am creating a month of awareness in April 2024. During this month there will be a number of events and challenges that I and friends and family will be partaking in to raise awareness for this disease. I am well aware that I cannot do this without people’s help. There will be more updates as to what this month will entail, and I hope this can bring some comfort to the many people who have and will suffer from leukaemia.

Every day, Anthony Nolan saves the lives of people with a blood cancer or blood disorder. We do this by matching incredible individuals willing to donate their stem cells to people who desperately need a lifesaving transplant. We also carry out cutting edge scientific research, fund specialist post-transplant nurses and support patients and their families through the transplant process and beyond. We won’t stop until we save the lives of everyone who needs a stem cell transplant. Every penny you donate brings us closer to that day.
