My Story
I've said for years that I'd love to run a Marathon so here we are, I'm finally doing it! It all started with me over hearing a conversation and asking someone how their toenail had fallen off (nice!). To which they replied I ran the London Marathon a few weeks ago, to which the fateful words came out of my mouth. I've always wanted to do that. Little did I realise my dream was about to come true when someone said why don't you do it for us then.......the us being RNID!
What an amazing charity and one very close to my heart. My sister Marie has hearing loss which now means she wears hearing aids in both her ears. We don't have a history of hearing loss or deafness in our family, especially for someone so young in their 50's! So it was quite a shock for all of us to get our heads around. Marie has been on quite a journey with her hearing loss. Hearing is a sense that most of us take for granted. It's essential to Marie's occupation and livlihood, as a psychotherapist; her ability to listen and I mean really listen is at the heart of what she offers to others. So when she realised she was starting to struggle she had to get her head around it quickly. It's been a quite a journey for Marie, one that she's happy to me to share with you so that you can understand the cause I'm running for. Marie tried to shrug it off to start with, thinking people were speaking quietly, asking them to speak up and sometimes trying to fill in the gaps that she had missed. She could get away with it for a while. It wasn't long though before she realised she was starting to miss important information. So she transitioned from denial, to coping then admitting she needed help. The first time it was suggested she might need hearing aids she tried to do without; and it wasn't long before she found herself returning, admitting she needed to use them. It was also around the same time as her beautiful grandchildren came into her life. The thought of missing out on precious moments of being able to truly interact and hear them was the last motivation she needed.
The amount of people who hide or just try and cope with hearing loss without getting help is signifcant and there is plenty of free support available from great organisations like those at RNID.
So please dontate to help them continue to provide the great services they do.
My target is £2000 so whatever you can spare to help me hit this target no matter how small will be gratefully received.
In the meantime why not go on the RNID website and try out their online hearing test, well worth and investment of your time!
With very warm wishes and thanks Julie xx
