In April I’m running the London marathon alongside my husband Nick for team Autism in celebration of our 5-year-old son Charlie.
Charlie is autistic, non-verbal and has a global development delay. Despite many challenges, he is a wonderful happy little boy who lives in his own very sweet and blissfully innocent world. His smile and eyes light up the room and it’s impossible for those who get to spend time with him not to develop a huge soft spot for him.
Although we suspected that Charlie was autistic from about 18months old, he has only recently been officially diagnosed. Over these last few years of Charlie’s diagnosis journey, we are delighted to see the awareness, acceptance and celebration of autism grow and grow, which will help us and society to better understand and learn how we can enter into their world.
This will be my second London marathon after running it in 2010 at 25. Despite being 14 years older and fast approaching 40, the aim and hope is to shave 1.5 hours off my finish time!
This will also be Nick's second marathon. He ran the Madrid marathon in the same year and is also looking to beat his time.
Without doubt, for Nick and I the months of training is daunting, especially over the winter months and whilst juggling each other’s training schedules, work, two children, and a puppy, but we’re determined!
We are proud to run for the National Autistic Society and play a small part in helping to raise awareness and change attitudes in creating a society that works for autistic people.
