My Story

The London Marathon has become an annual, inspiring and colourful fixture in the world’s sporting calendar since the inaugural race on 29 March 1981: a celebration of fun, fundraising and fancy dress.

I’m running the London Marathon in loving memory of my daughter Lily, who sadly lost her fight in May 2011.

Lily’s Story

Lily was born a healthy baby on the 30th November 2010, but unfortunately became unwell in April 2011 when she caught Chicken Pox, she had a particularly severe reaction to the virus and while at our local hospital, she continued to deteriorate and needed to be transferred urgently to St Mary’s Hospital.

At St Marys she was placed on a ventilator. As the days and weeks passed, we learnt more about Lily’s condition. Not only did she have severe reaction to Chicken Pox, they found she hadpneumococcal a bacteria infection of the lungs which caused her to have septicaemia, even worse news came, it was revealed that poor Lily had a condition called HLH, which is an over active immune system caused by her severe reaction to the Chicken Pox. Long term treatment would have been a bone marrow transplant.

A few days passed and the nightmare got even worse.  Lily had a MRI scan and the feedback was she had severe/global brain damage.  Lily sadly passed away on 26th May 2011.

Why I’m running the London Marathon

Since Lily I’ve used running to relieve stress and anxiety. I wanted to give something back to St Mary’s Hospital and show my appreciation to all the Doctors and Nurses and the amazing support that you receive while Lily was in hospital.
