My Story

Nick is running on 21st April 2024 for the London Marathon for Brain Research UK!

On 29th April 2022 Nick suffered traumatic brain injury following a fall after tripping on a kerb.

Nick was taken to Frimley Park Hospital and later transferred to St. George's,Tooting where he underwent emergency surgery to stop a bleed on his brain. We were not sure how much of Nick would wake up or if he'd pull through due to the seriousness of his injury.

After spending time in the intensive care at St. George's,he was transferred back to Frimley Park Hospital where he spent some time on a ward to recover from his surgery.

Due to his life changing injury,Nick had to go through rehabilitation to be able to cope with day to day life again. In June he was transferred to Woking Community Hospital, where he would stay for another 2 months before eventually coming home in September.

We are all so thankful that Nick made it through but unfortunately he has been left with life changing conditions. One of which is called aphasia, which means he struggles to communicate effectively with others. Nick is also unable to drive, has hearing problems and has no taste or smell which has taken away a lot of his independence.

Despite all of this,Nick generally has a positive outlook on life and enjoys spending time with his children and grandchildren. He has also been able to take up his favourite hobby again, golf, albeit not as well as pre-accident!

To overcome these obstacles in itself is remarkable, but to dedicate himself to running the London Marathon 2024 just 2 years after a traumatic brain injury is incredible.

Nick has chosen to run for Brain Research UK and would very much appreciate any donations. This charity supports so many people like Nick, with neurological disorders to help them live a better life.

Thank you all so much in advance for your support.

This has been written on behalf of Nick by his wife,Bridget.

Brain Research UK is the UK’s leading national funder dedicated to research into neurological conditions. They fund vital research to increase understanding, improve diagnosis and treatment, and work towards the prevention of neurological conditions, to help people who suffer with them live better, longer. Their funding is currently focused on three priority research areas: Brain tumours, Brain and spinal cord injury, and Headache and facial pain. These are areas where there is a large unmet patient need that is not reflected in current funding levels. By concentrating efforts on these three areas, they can have a more significant impact.

Help me to make a difference - your support means that we can continue to fund life-changing research so that people living with neurological conditions can live better longer.
