My Story
This year I will be running the London Marthon for the first (and possibly, last) time! After seeing friends complete it in years prior, I had to sign up, and I'm excited to say this year I will be running for the amazing charity: Shelter!
Shelter are a fantastic charity, they continue to do crucial work on the ground to tackle homelessness, and advocate for tenants' rights in the UK. With the deteriorating cost of living crisis, and cuts to public services in the last decade, their work has become even more vital for those who find themselves in desparate situations, and without permanent fixed accommodation.
You can consider yourself fortunate if you've never had to intereact with a given charity, never being in such a situation of need. I'd imagine most of you haven't needed Shelter's services either. This was the same for myself until a year ago, when I found myself in an acute housing crisis. Shelter's online resources, and tenancy advice helped guide me through this difficult time, providing information for the rights of renters.
This outlines the scope of amazing work Shelter do. It's easy to think of homelessness and rough-sleeping as something that might never happen. But is it far-fetched to consider your rent being raised, your property being declared unsafe, or your landlord requesting your immediate eviction? Shelter aims to help renters in all types of situations.
Shortly about myself, I first got the itch to run the marathon after seeing a friend do the same two years ago. The noise, the cheering, and the atmosphere, along the route that Sunday was incredible, and I can't wait for that weekend in April. I'm excited to begin training, especially once the weather improves, and would welcome any and all donations that can help motivate me along the way. As you'd expect 100% of the money you give goes to Shelter, as it should
