My Story

We (Haggis, Archibald & Sally), are walking this year's 2024 TCS London Marathon.

We are hoping to raise £500 for the Commonwealth War Graves Foundation, the charity arm of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.

Our Human (Sally) has 3 relatives commemorated and cared for by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission:

Serjeant George Pringle, Somerset Light Infantry, 3 Jul 1916, buried in Daours Cemetery Extension, France.

Gunner Matthew Wallace, 64 Medium Regiment, Royal Artillery, died 14 November 1942, Commemorated on Alamein Memorial.

Blacksmith Fifth Class, (Stoker), Eric Diggle Dodds, Royal Navy, HMS Barham, 25 November 1941.

All of these 3 deaths had a huge impact on our family, particularly on our Grandmother who herself served in the Auxiliary Territorial Service (ATS), Royal Signals throughout the Second World War.

Our human (Sally) served in the Royal Air Force for 16 years as a regular servicewoman and Officer Training Corps (OTC), Army, whilst at University.

Although our human had been many battlefield tours and visits while serving and had visited many CWGC cemeteries as part of her undergraduate and later post graduate history degrees, she had not been to visit her Gt Gt Uncle George Pringle until 2018.

She was the very first member of the family to visit in over 100 years.

To say the experience was profound would be an understatement, she felt the energy of all her relatives with her. The cemetery, Daours Communal Cemetery Extension in France, was beautiful, tranquil, peaceful and testament to the hard work, care and commitment from Commonwealth War Graves Commission staff.

We often hear HM Forces veterans expressing a wish to contribute something back towards those who served before them. The sentiment is true of Sally, who owes a debt of gratitude to all of those who served in two World Wars before her, but especially to the CWGC for the care taken of her relatives all of these years.
