My Story

Why Maggies?

My first wife Sue and I started walking the Maggie's (west London)  annual night-hike every year from around 2005 when we were living in London. We enjoyed the experience, it coincided with the London open house weekend so was an awesome way to see the city, and we wanted to support the charity.

We did this for several years with friends and colleagues and it was a real team building and bonding experience for us, as well as a good work out! It's a walk of 20 miles around London, overnight.

Tragically in 2010, Sue herself was diagnosed with breast cancer, and far more quickly than was prognosed, died. She, her friends and family did receive support from Maggie's West London at the time. We (the group who did the hikes together), did the night hike again in her name a year later.

This is what makes Maggie's so great: they don't just treat the patient, they are there for the people around them as well. The NHS is fantastic, but they simply cannot stretch to supporting the people around the patient who are affected as well.

These experiences led me to be a proud sponsor of Maggie's and what they do, and to our partnership at Barclays. I have previously done sponsored live DJ streams, a tough mudder and gardening at their sites.

The Marathon:

The London Marathon has become an annual, inspiring and colourful fixture in the world’s sporting calendar since the inaugural race on 29 March 1981: a celebration of fun, fundraising and fancy dress.

I ran the London Marathon myself, back in 2010 - my only marathon ever, as a casual runner who started running in 2009, and I managed to run a 4:31. I then took a long break from running and only really started again this year in January.

To set myself a real challenge for London 24, and to encourage you to donate as much as possible, I am aiming to run in 3:45 or less this time. That's just under 2 minutes quicker per mile than last time. The training is tough, I have a ways to go, but I hope you will respond to that extra effort in supporting Maggie's, such a fantastic charity.

Wish me luck, Tom.
