Tom & Becky Raftery
My Story
Having lost Anita (Becky's mum) to cancer, we understand the impact this horrible illness can have on families and so wanted to do something to raise money (and awareness).
Becky came across this wonderful charity through her work as a children's physiotherapist and working with families who's children are undergoing treatment for cancer. Having three young children ourselves, it is so hard to imagine how these families cope with the shock, sadness and fear that comes with the diagnosis. The Children with Cancer Charity can bring support, comfort and hope to this often difficult journey and Becky has seen first hand what a difference things like special days out and providing accommodation near to a hospital can have on families she has worked with. We would love to raise as much as possible to allow more families to be supported in this way as well as to support funding vital research and raising awareness.
Now, we understand that running a marathon might not be the best way to get those of you who know us to put your hand in your pocket! We both love running and so we thought we would have to come up with something a little different... Please meet Colin the Camel, who we will attempt to get round the London marathon course in a Guinness world record time to raise as much money as possible... It'll be hot, sweaty (probably smelly depending on how many gels Tom needs) and you cant see your feet (or much else). Anita, like us, had a passion for running. She was a true fighter right to the end, so if she can complete five days of orienteering the week before she sadly passed, then we can trot round 26.2 miles in a camel costume... in perfect synchroniasation... in the heat... or the rain...
So please do sponsor us with as much as you can and watch out for us on the day. There are bound to be a ups and downs, but we will do our best to hump this costume round 26.2 miles!
